Web app design agencies

The agencies that design browser-based software, from SaaS dashboards to developer tools — with engagement model, pricing signal, and best-fit brief for each.

00 The brief

A web app is not a website with a login.

The user arrives every working day, spends hours inside it, and gets fast at it, which inverts most of what consumer design teaches. Density beats whitespace. Keyboard beats click target. A guided flow that helps someone on day one becomes an obstacle by week three. The agencies below design for that, across SaaS platforms, internal tools, dashboards, and developer products. Pay attention to engagement model here more than in any other category, because this is the one place where subscription and embedded-designer arrangements often beat a fixed project.

Ten web app design studios

// 01

Clay Global

Enterprise and SaaS interfaces, with the brand in the same studio.

the gist
Clay built its practice on enterprise and SaaS software before adding brand and web, so dense B2B products are home territory rather than a stretch. It is strongest where a platform carries multiple user roles and the design question is what each one should see. Design systems are a core service, which matters when your in-house team will keep shipping features for years after the engagement ends.
best known for
Product and interface work for Google, Amazon, Slack, Stripe, Coinbase, and Sony.
core strengths
Enterprise and SaaS UX, design systems, UX research, UI design, brand identity.
reach out if
You have a functionally dense platform and want the interface and the identity resolved together.
details
Global, remote-first, San Francisco HQ, NY office at 148 Lafayette St · Independent.
// 02

MetaLab

The studio that set the template for modern SaaS interfaces.

the gist
MetaLab's browser-based work is the reason a generation of SaaS products look the way they do, and its house approach is subtractive: fewer elements, clearer hierarchy, less to learn. It runs from strategy through engineering rather than handing over comps, and it is a benchmark reference point when you want to describe what good looks like.
best known for
Early interface work for Slack and Coinbase, plus product work for Apple, Disney, Google, and Uber Eats.
core strengths
Product design, UI/UX, prototyping, engineering, design systems.
reach out if
You want a benchmark-quality interface and have the budget to match the reputation.
details
Founded 2006 · Victoria, BC, remote-first with teams across roughly 19 countries · Independent.
// 03

Eleken

SaaS design and nothing else, on a subscription.

the gist
Eleken designs exclusively for SaaS and deliberately does not develop, which makes it a clean fit for teams that already have engineering and need design capacity rather than a full agency. It works as an embedded dedicated designer on a monthly subscription rather than a fixed project, with a two-month minimum and a free trial before you commit. Strongest on redesigning complex existing products, weakest as a partner if you need someone to build what they draw.
best known for
Over 200 SaaS projects including Gamaya in precision agriculture, TenderX in freight tendering, and TextMagic.
core strengths
SaaS UI/UX design, product redesign, UX audits, design systems, prototyping.
reach out if
You have developers and need a senior SaaS designer embedded in the team next week.
details
Founded 2015 · Ukraine-based, remote, mostly GMT+2 · 100+ people · Design-only, no development · Independent.
// 04

Work & Co

Platform-scale web products where reliability is a design constraint.

the gist
Work & Co designs browser-based platforms that carry heavy real traffic, and performance is treated as a design factor rather than an engineering afterthought. Senior people stay on through delivery and work next to engineers, which in web app work mostly prevents the classic failure of a design that cannot be built as drawn.
best known for
The MTA's live New York subway map, plus digital products for Apple, Google, Nike, IKEA, and Mailchimp.
core strengths
Product UX, information architecture, usability research, design systems, prototyping in code.
reach out if
Your platform has to hold up under serious load and the design decisions need to survive contact with it.
details
Founded 2013 · Dumbo, Brooklyn, with global offices · Owned by Accenture since 2024.

Mission Control

Senior designers on deliberately complicated software.

the gist
A small, fully remote senior team working on complex digital products for startups and growth-stage technology companies. It caps concurrent engagements, so the principal who scopes the work is the one doing it. Complex web apps are exactly its territory: dense state, multiple roles, and business rules that resist simplification.
best known for
A low public profile by design, with no published client list, so this is one to judge on the portfolio.
core strengths
Product and UX design, UI, design strategy.
reach out if
You want principal-level attention on a complicated product without agency overhead.
details
Fully remote, asynchronous-first · Independent.

Big Human

Web apps and SaaS for teams building the first version.

the gist
A New York studio working across web apps, SaaS, and ecommerce alongside mobile, mostly with startups. Its instinct is to scope a first release tightly rather than design the roadmap, which suits a browser product that needs to exist before it needs to be complete. Branding sits in-house next to product design, useful when the company is new enough that neither exists yet.
best known for
The team behind HQ Trivia and Vine, with client work for Whistle, Rockefeller Center, Gemini, and Netflix.
core strengths
Product design, web and app development, UI/UX, product strategy, branding.
reach out if
You are building a first web product and need it launched rather than studied.
details
New York, 51 E 12th St · Independent.

Merge

B2B and fintech products, from MVP through full build.

the gist
A product design studio concentrating on B2B, SaaS, and fintech, with design and development working closely rather than sequentially. A practical pick when the product is workflow-driven or data-heavy rather than consumer-flashy, and when you want the same team from a first version through to a mature platform.
best known for
SaaS and fintech product design and development across early MVPs and established platforms, without a broadly published named-client list.
core strengths
Product and UX design, UI, web and product development, brand.
reach out if
You are building a B2B, SaaS, or fintech web product and want design tied tightly to build.
details
Focused on B2B, SaaS, and fintech · Independent.

Netguru

Design plus engineering capacity at genuine scale.

the gist
A large European product and software firm pairing product design with substantial engineering headcount, working as an embedded partner from startup through enterprise. The right call when the constraint is capacity rather than taste, and when a boutique studio would stall on the size of the build.
best known for
Long-running product design and development engagements across SaaS, fintech, and enterprise clients.
core strengths
Product design, UX/UI, web development, digital consulting.
reach out if
You need design and serious engineering volume from one partner.
details
Founded 2008 · Poznań, Poland, publicly listed.

frog

Enterprise product and service design, with the history to match.

the gist
Founded in 1969 and famous for the early design language of Apple and the Sony Walkman, frog is now a global consultancy inside Capgemini Invent. On web application work its value is at the top end of complexity, where the software problem is entangled with a business process problem and the engagement spans more than an interface. Consultancy scale and consultancy pricing.
best known for
Historic product design for Apple and Sony, and today large-scale product and experience programmes across industries.
core strengths
Product and service design, UX, strategy, engineering, industrial design.
reach out if
Your web platform is one part of a broader transformation and you need a partner who can work at that level.
details
Founded 1969 · San Francisco HQ, studios including New York, London, Munich, Bangalore, Singapore · Part of Capgemini Invent.

STRV

Design and engineering in one team, priced between US and European.

the gist
STRV builds web and mobile products for established brands and well-funded startups, keeping design and engineering together and leaning premium on code quality. Its Prague engineering base alongside US offices puts it between American studio rates and offshore pricing, which is a real consideration on a long build.
best known for
Product work for Porsche, Tinder, Barnes & Noble, The Athletic, and Barry's.
core strengths
Product and UI/UX design, web development, AI development, strategy.
reach out if
You want one team across design and engineering for a substantial web product.
details
Los Angeles, New York, and Prague · Independent.

Web app design, answered

What actually separates a web app from a website?+
Frequency and expertise. A website visitor arrives occasionally, knows nothing, and leaves quickly, so clarity and persuasion matter most. A web app user arrives daily, becomes expert within weeks, and stays for hours, so speed, density, and keyboard access matter more than onboarding polish. Agencies that primarily do marketing sites tend to over-design web apps, adding guidance and whitespace that becomes friction for someone on their four-hundredth session.
Should we hire a design-only agency or one that develops too?+
Depends on what you already have. If you have engineers and the bottleneck is design capacity, a design-only partner like Eleken avoids paying for a build team you don't need, and drops in faster. If you have no front-end capability, or the interface depends on technical decisions nobody has made yet, a combined team resolves those in place instead of across a handoff. The failure case is hiring a full-service agency when you only needed two designers.
How do we handle a data-dense interface without it becoming unreadable?+
Ask candidates to show you a dashboard they designed and explain what they removed. Density done well is a hierarchy problem, not a layout problem, and the useful skill is deciding what a given user role never needs to see. Be suspicious of portfolios where every dashboard looks calm and spacious, because real operational tools rarely get to be.
What does web app design cost, and which pricing model should we take?+
This category runs three models. Fixed project work commonly starts in the tens of thousands for a defined scope. Monthly subscription for an embedded designer is priced per designer per month and suits continuous product work. Weekly or daily rates suit sprint-shaped engagements and are worth asking for by name. Match the model to the work: a redesign is a project, but ongoing feature design is a subscription, and paying project rates for continuous work is how budgets disappear.
How long does it take?+
Eight to sixteen weeks for research and design on a defined product or a major redesign. Design sprints run two weeks and are a reasonable way to test an agency before a larger commitment. Continuous engagements have no end date by design, which is appropriate for a product that ships weekly and a poor fit if you need a fixed budget approved in advance.
We're redesigning an existing product. What should we expect?+
Resistance, and you should plan for it. Existing users have built muscle memory around the current interface, including its flaws, and a redesign that tests well with new users can still anger the people paying you. The agencies with real experience here will ask early about your power users, propose a phased rollout rather than a single switch, and treat migration as part of the design brief rather than a launch problem.
