iOS app design agencies

Agencies with genuine Apple platform credentials — from Apple Design Award winners to native Swift studios — and what each is actually built for.

00 The brief

Designing well for iOS is mostly a discipline of restraint.

Apple has already decided how navigation, gestures, typography, and system sheets should behave, and the agencies that do this best treat those conventions as a foundation rather than an obstacle to their own ideas. An iOS app that ignores the Human Interface Guidelines feels wrong to users who cannot articulate why. The credential to look for is not a large client list but evidence Apple itself has noticed the work: a Design Award, an App Store feature, an editorial placement. Those are handed out by the platform owner, not bought, which makes them the rare unfakeable signal in this category.

Ten iOS app design studios

// 01

ustwo

An Apple Design Award winner, and it shows in the client work.

the gist
ustwo has the strongest Apple credential of any studio on this list, and unusually it earned it on its own product rather than a client's. That matters because the same interaction sensibility runs through its commissioned work, where it moves between consumer apps and regulated medical and enterprise platforms. Two decades in, with genuine engineering alongside the design.
best known for
Monument Valley, winner of the 2014 Apple Design Award and Apple Game of the Year, plus product work for Google, Peloton, Samsung, HSBC, and Google DeepMind.
core strengths
iOS product design, UX research, interaction design, engineering, product strategy.
reach out if
Craft is the point, and you want a team that has been recognised by Apple rather than by an awards body you have to explain.
details
Founded 2004 · London HQ, Brooklyn studio at 20 Jay St, also Malmö, Lisbon, Tokyo · Independent, B Corp.

Clay Global

iOS interfaces for products at consumer scale, with the brand attached.

the gist
Clay's iOS work sits with products that carry large user bases and heavy brand expectations, where the app icon, the onboarding, and the identity are one impression rather than three deliverables. It runs research-led UX and brand from the same studio, which is worth more on iOS than elsewhere because App Store presentation is part of the product.
best known for
App and interface work for Coinbase, Snapchat, Google, Amazon, Slack, and Sony.
core strengths
iOS app UX and UI, product strategy, design systems, brand identity, App Store presentation.
reach out if
You want the app and the brand designed as one thing by one team.
details
Global, remote-first, San Francisco HQ, NY office at 148 Lafayette St · Independent.
// 03

Lickability

A small studio that does Apple platforms and very little else.

the gist
Lickability is the closest thing on this list to a pure Apple-platform practice, working in Swift across iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and visionOS with a team small enough that you get senior people by default. It runs daily design critiques internally and publishes them, which tells you something about how it thinks. The trade-off is capacity: this is a studio for a focused, well-made app, not a parallel multi-platform programme.
best known for
Design partner to Mastodon since 2021 across its iOS app, plus work for The Atlantic, The New York Times, Tumblr, Condé Nast, Clubhouse, and Meetup.
core strengths
Native iOS and Apple platform design, Swift development, accessibility, product discovery, code audits.
reach out if
You want a hand-built iPhone or iPad app from a small senior team and Android is somebody else's problem.
details
Fully remote in the US, most of the team around New York · Under ten people · Four-day week · Independent.

Fueled

App Store hits, delivered at pace.

the gist
Fueled built its name on mobile-first work with a track record of App Store recognition, and it has the unusual credential of having built apps for Apple itself. It moves quickly, which suits a product with a launch date attached. Ownership has changed materially: it merged with 10up in 2023 with private equity backing, and the combined company has restructured since, so ask specifically who will be on your team.
best known for
Apple App of the Year-winning work, plus iOS and Android apps for Warby Parker, Verizon, the United Nations, Apple, and The New York Times.
core strengths
iOS app design and development, digital strategy, UX, native and cross-platform engineering.
reach out if
You want design and engineering under one roof and speed to the App Store matters more than a long research phase.
details
New York and London · Merged with 10up in 2023 · Backed by Insignia Capital Group.

Mission Control

Senior iOS and product design without the agency layer.

the gist
A small remote team designing apps and digital products for startups and growth-stage technology companies, capping concurrent engagements so principals stay on the work rather than moving to the next pitch. A sensible option when your product is complicated and you would rather have two excellent designers than a full account team.
best known for
A low public profile by design, with no published client list, so this is one to judge on the portfolio.
core strengths
Product and app design, UI/UX, design strategy.
reach out if
You want senior attention on a complex iOS product and don't need a team you can visit.
details
Fully remote, asynchronous-first · Independent.

Utility

The studio that sweats the transitions.

the gist
Utility is design-led and unusually focused on interaction states, the gestures and animations that separate an app that functions from one that feels native. On iOS that focus is the whole game, because users compare your app to Apple's own without realising they are doing it. It designs and ships rather than handing over a specification.
best known for
Apps and products for Airbnb, the NBA, Shake Shack, Samsung, Verizon, and DirecTV.
core strengths
iOS and Android interface design, interaction design, mobile UX/UI, product development.
reach out if
Your app works but feels slightly off, and nobody on your team can say why.
details
New York · Independent.

STRV

iOS at genuine consumer scale, with engineering to match.

the gist
STRV builds mobile products for large consumer brands and well-funded startups, keeping design and engineering in one team and leaning premium on code quality. Its portfolio includes apps operating at a scale where iOS performance and reliability become design constraints rather than engineering details. Prague engineering alongside US offices puts its pricing below comparable American studios.
best known for
Product work for Tinder, Porsche, Barnes & Noble, The Athletic, and Barry's.
core strengths
Product and UI/UX design, iOS and mobile development, AI development, strategy.
reach out if
You need design and serious engineering for an iOS product with a lot of users.
details
Los Angeles, New York, and Prague · Independent.

ArcTouch

An App Store original, now with the whole Apple ecosystem.

the gist
Founded in 2008 as the App Store opened, ArcTouch has shipped over 500 apps and works across phones, tablets, TVs, wearables, and voice. Its value on iOS specifically is ecosystem breadth: if your product needs an Apple Watch companion or a tvOS app alongside the phone, that is one team rather than three vendors. Acquired by WPP in 2016 and part of AKQA, so expect holding-company scale.
best known for
Apps for 3M, Audi, CBS, NBC, Hawaiian Airlines, McCormick, PayPal, and Tile, with work for Apple, IBM, HP, and Adobe.
core strengths
iOS app design and development, Apple ecosystem and wearables, UX/UI, connected experiences, design systems.
reach out if
Your iOS product extends beyond the iPhone and you want one partner across the devices.
details
Founded 2008 · San Francisco HQ, plus New York, Austin, Toronto, London · 350+ people · Part of WPP, joined AKQA in 2016.

Big Human

Consumer iOS products that found real audiences.

the gist
Big Human's team was behind two genuine consumer phenomena, which is a harder credential to earn than a client roster and a useful signal if your product lives or dies on whether people actually open it. It works mostly with startups and scopes a first release tightly rather than designing the full roadmap. Branding sits in-house next to product design.
best known for
The team behind HQ Trivia and Vine, with client work for Whistle, Rockefeller Center, Gemini, and Netflix.
core strengths
iOS product design, app development, UI/UX, product strategy, branding.
reach out if
You are building a consumer iOS app and engagement is the risk, not the feature list.
details
New York, 51 E 12th St · Independent.

Bottle Rocket

Brand apps, with the Apple awards to prove it.

the gist
One of the earliest App Store developers, Bottle Rocket has launched more than 300 mobile and connected experiences and holds several Apple awards. It treats an app as one part of a wider brand ecosystem, which fits established companies better than founders on a first product. Now over 1,100 people inside the WPP network, with pricing to match.
best known for
Apps for Coca-Cola, Chick-fil-A, Southwest Airlines, Mary Kay, and Baylor Scott & White.
core strengths
iOS app design and development, product strategy, research and insights, connected TV and wearables.
reach out if
You are an established brand and the app has to meet both Apple's standards and your own.

iOS app design, answered

What does "native iOS design" actually mean, and does it matter?+
It means designing with Apple's Human Interface Guidelines rather than around them: system navigation patterns, standard sheets and modals, Dynamic Type, the gestures users already have in their fingers. It matters because iOS users have thousands of hours of muscle memory built on Apple's own apps, and an interface that invents its own conventions costs them effort they did not agree to spend. Ask a candidate agency to critique your current app against the guidelines. The specific answers tell you whether they actually know them.
Should we build native Swift or go cross-platform?+
If iOS is your primary platform and the experience is your differentiator, native gives you access to new system features on day one and the interaction fidelity users notice without naming. Cross-platform frameworks are a reasonable trade when you need both platforms on one budget and the app is more functional than expressive. The decision is strategic rather than technical, so make it before you hire, because agencies specialise and will each recommend what they do.
Is an Apple Design Award worth anything as a credential?+
More than most awards, because Apple selects the winners and you cannot enter your way to one. It signals that the platform owner considers the work exemplary on its own terms. Treat App Store features and editorial placements similarly. What none of them tell you is whether the studio can work with your team, hit your timeline, or handle your particular domain, so use them as a filter rather than a decision.
What does iOS app design cost?+
Design-only work on a focused app commonly starts in the tens of thousands. Design and build through to App Store release runs into six figures for anything substantial, with the WPP-owned studios quoting from a higher floor than the boutiques. Small Apple-platform specialists often work at high hourly rates with modest project minimums, which is a good structure for a well-defined app and a poor one for an open-ended programme.
How much should we worry about App Store review?+
Less than founders fear, and more than they plan for. Straightforward apps clear review routinely, but subscriptions, external payment links, user-generated content, and anything touching health or finance attract real scrutiny, and a rejection late in the process is expensive. An experienced iOS partner will flag the risky patterns during design rather than discovering them at submission. Ask directly whether they have had an app rejected and what happened next.
Do we need to think about Apple Watch, iPad, or Vision Pro now?+
Usually not at launch, but the decision shapes the design. Building an iPhone app with a companion in mind produces different information architecture than one designed alone, and retrofitting is expensive. Decide early whether the ecosystem is part of the product or a later question, then hire accordingly, since ArcTouch and Lickability sit at opposite ends of that spectrum.
