Mobile app design agencies

The agencies that design mobile apps as their core discipline — with the App Store track record, ownership status, and best-fit brief for each.

00 The brief

Mobile is where design has the least room to hide.

There is no hover state to lean on, no second monitor, and a user who will delete the thing inside a week if the first session disappoints. The agencies here treat that as their main discipline rather than a service line under a web practice, and several have been doing it since the App Store opened. A note on ownership: this category consolidated heavily, and several of the best-known app specialists now sit inside holding companies. That isn't disqualifying, but it changes who you get, so each entry states where the firm stands.

Clay Global

Full-stack app UX and branding, from strategy through launch.

the gist
Clay began as a UX practice for mobile and enterprise software and expanded into brand and web without losing the product core. It handles app strategy, interface design, and front-end build in one place, and having brand in the same studio matters on mobile, where the icon, the onboarding, and the identity are all the same first impression.
best known for
App and interface work for Google, Amazon, Slack, Coinbase, Snapchat, Sony, and Stripe.
core strengths
App and UI/UX design, product strategy, design systems, brand identity, web design and development.

Monument Valley, built in house, plus product work for Google, Peloton, Samsung, HSBC, and Google DeepMind.
core strengths
Digital product design, UX research, interaction design, engineering, product strategy.

An app specialist from the year the App Store opened.

the gist
Founded in 2008 in Silicon Valley at the start of the app era, ArcTouch has shipped over 500 apps and connected experiences and runs design alongside engineering across phones, TVs, wearables, and voice. Its breadth across device types is unusual, and useful if your product doesn't stop at the phone. Acquired by WPP in 2016 and part of AKQA, so it now offers holding-company scale rather than boutique intimacy.
best known for
Apps for 3M, Audi, CBS, NBC, Hawaiian Airlines, McCormick, PayPal, Guess, and Tile, plus a redesign of Intermex's money transfer app.
core strengths
iOS and Android app design and development, UX/UI, connected and IoT experiences, product strategy, design systems.

Bottle Rocket

Mobile-first by origin, now a transformation partner.

the gist
One of the earliest App Store developers, Bottle Rocket built its reputation on apps for large consumer brands and has launched more than 300 mobile, streaming, wearable, and connected TV experiences. It thinks about an app as part of a wider brand ecosystem, which suits established companies more than founders on a first product. Now over 1,100 people inside the WPP network, and priced accordingly.
best known for
Apps for Coca-Cola, Chick-fil-A, Southwest Airlines, Mary Kay, and Baylor Scott & White, with several Apple awards.

Mission Control

Lean, senior app design for tech teams.

the gist
A small, fully remote senior team designing apps and digital products for startups and growth-stage companies. It caps how many clients it takes at once, so engagements get principal attention rather than being handed down after the pitch.
best known for
A low public profile by design, with no published client list, so this is one to judge on the portfolio.
core strengths
Product and app design, UI/UX, design strategy.
reach out if
You want senior app-design attention without big-agency overhead.
details
Fully remote, asynchronous-first · Independent.
// 07

Utility

Design-led, and it ships to the store.

the gist
Built by creatives and technologists, Utility pairs app design with engineering and states an obsession with interface detail. On mobile that shows in transitions and states rather than screens, which is the difference between an app that works and one that feels right. It designs and ships rather than handing over a spec.
best known for
Apps and products for Airbnb, the NBA, Shake Shack, Samsung, Verizon, and DirecTV.
core strengths
Mobile app UX/UI, interaction design, iOS and Android, product development.
reach out if
Interaction detail is what separates your app from the competition and you want people who sweat it.
details
New York · Independent.

Fueled

Mobile-first by origin, fast by design.

the gist
Fueled built its name shipping apps quickly for startups and large brands, combining design with native and cross-platform engineering under one roof. It has the rare credential of having built apps for Apple, and a track record of App Store recognition. Ownership changed materially: it merged with 10up in 2023 with private equity backing and has restructured since, so establish who is actually assigned before signing.
best known for
Apple App of the Year-winning work, plus iOS and Android apps for Warby Parker, Verizon, the United Nations, and The New York Times.
core strengths
App design and development, digital strategy, UX, native and cross-platform engineering.

You want design and engineering in one team and a launch date that isn't negotiable.
details
New York and London · Merged with 10up in 2023 · Backed by Insignia Capital Group.

Punchcut

Interface design for what the phone connects to.

the gist
A small San Francisco studio working on human interface design across mobile and connected products since 2002, organised around autonomous devices, immersive spaces, and pervasive services. It sits at the strategy and concept end rather than production UI, and says plainly that it is not a mobile app company even though its designs end up in apps. Read that as a fit signal, not a warning.
best known for
Multi-device and emerging-technology interface work across finance, automotive, health, entertainment, and consumer technology, with no broadly published client list.
core strengths
Human interface design, concept ideation, multi-device UX, emerging technology, design acceleration.
reach out if
You are defining a new product category or a cross-device experience and need the thinking before the screens.
details
Founded 2002 · San Francisco, 150 California St · 10 to 49 people · Independent.

Miquido

European app delivery at mid-market rates.

the gist
A Kraków studio pairing product design with native and cross-platform engineering, with a strong Flutter practice and a serious AI capability alongside it. It handles the full arc from discovery workshops through maintenance, and its pricing band makes it a realistic option for teams priced out of the US studios above.
best known for
250-plus products for brands including Warner, Dolby, Abbey Road Studios, Skyscanner, and TUI, plus native apps for Polish telecom operator Play.
core strengths
Mobile app design and development, product strategy and discovery, UX/UI, Flutter and cross-platform, AI and data.
reach out if
You want design and engineering in one European team and the US agency rates don't fit your budget.
details

Mobile app design, answered

What's the difference between an app design agency and an app development company?+
Where the value sits. A development company takes a defined product and builds it well, and judges itself on shipping to spec. A design agency decides what the product should be first, through research, flows, and interface work, and treats the build as the consequence. Most firms on this list do both, but they lead from different ends, and hiring a development shop when your real problem is that nobody has defined the product is the most expensive mistake in this category.
Do iOS and Android need separate designs?+
Not separate design work, but separate design decisions. Navigation patterns, system gestures, typography defaults, and how each platform handles back behaviour all differ, and an app that ignores those reads as a port rather than a native product. The practical answer is one design system with platform-specific components. Ask an agency to show you the same product on both platforms and look at whether the differences were deliberate.
How should I judge an app agency's portfolio?+
Download the apps. This category is unusual in that the finished work is publicly available and free, so you can use it rather than look at case study screenshots. Check the App Store rating, read the recent one-star reviews, and look at how often the app has been updated, because a beautiful app abandoned two years ago tells you something about how the engagement ended. Case study images are chosen by the agency; the App Store listing is not.
What does mobile app design cost?+
A design-only engagement for a focused app commonly starts in the tens of thousands. Design and build together for a production app on both platforms runs into six figures, and the firms inside holding companies quote from a higher floor than independent studios of the same quality. European teams like Miquido sit materially below US rates for comparable work, which is a real option rather than a compromise if you can manage the time difference.
How long does it take?+
Eight to fourteen weeks for research and design on a defined app. Design and build to a first App Store release is usually four to seven months depending on platform count and backend complexity. Build App Store review into the schedule as a real step rather than a formality, because a rejection late in the process costs more than the review itself.
What happens after launch?+
This is where most app engagements quietly fail. The first release generates the data that tells you what the design got wrong, and the agency is often gone by then. Agree upfront who handles the first three months of iteration, whether analytics instrumentation is included, and what a retainer costs, because retrofitting that conversation after launch is how apps get abandoned at version 1.0.
